To understand the Great Books, it is helpful to have a strong foundation in the worlds of Greece, Rome, and Medieval Europe. To provide this, I offer classes for grades 7-8 introducing students to Ancient Greece and Rome and the Medieval World. These classes are offered on a rotating two-year cycle (Year A, Greece and Rome and Year B, Medieval World). Students will read and discuss the historical period , enjoy literature focusing on that period, and use what they’ve learned in writing assignments, working through the first seven units of The Institute for Excellence on Writing program, culminating in the five-paragraph essay.
To help students appreciate literature more deeply, I also offer courses in which great children's literature is combined with literary analysis, both in discussion and writing.
History / Literature classes meet weekly for 1 1/2 hours.
Narnia classes meet weekly for 60-75 minutes.
Semesters are 16 weeks in length.
This course concentrates on the worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome, from the early Minoan Civilization in 2000 BC to the Fall of Rome in 476 AD. We also take a brief side detour into Ancient Egypt.
This course follows Europe through Medieval Times, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Not only do we read and write about the major people and events of this era, we also look at the blossoming of Renaissance art with numerous examples.
In this class we will read all The Chronicles of Narnia while concentrating on literary analysis. Students will learn the basic elements of fiction (setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme) while we also explore context (the life of C.S. Lewis himself) and stylistic features that contribute to the plot and theme. Students will also learn to write about each book, using the IEW literary analysis model.
Do your students need to work on their writing skills? The Institute for Excellence on Writing is a fantastic way to engage reluctant writers and help those who write with ease to channel and edit their work. I have been using IEW materials for nearly 25 years and am a registered instructor. I am in the process of developing shorter-term writing workshops and semester- and year-length classes.
